Should I or Shouldn't I? - Exploring the Ins and outs of Emigration
In the wake of the recent Budget Speech, before that the State of the Nation Address and an impending National Election, South Africans find themselves caught between a shifting current reality and an unpredictable future. This has created a level of insecurity where people are making fear-based decisions, or even worse, making no decisions at all.
Author of The Prosperity Bible, Napoleon Hill sums it up with these words:
“Indecision, doubt and fear. The members of this unholy trio are closely related; where one is found, the other two are close at hand”.
This is where you – as advisers - need to step up and be the steadying hand that guides your clients towards making the most informed decisions they can for the journey that lies ahead.
Why?
Because it’s in our nature to keep moving forward. It’s in our culture to forge a better future. And now, as some people stand poised on the precipice of departure, it’s more important than ever to CONNECT.

We are – as a nation – fearful and financially fraught. So much so that many people have made the decision and decided: ‘Yes, I should.’ An alarming number of South Africans have left for foreign shores or are seriously contemplating emigration.
In today’s episode we will be unpacking the impact of such a drastic decision – financially, practically, and emotionally. We need to stay abreast of the ‘brain drain’ of highly qualified people leaving the country, not only to be aware of what sort of future it implies for you and your clients, but what it implies for the economy for the next generation.
I’m sure at some stage or another, we’ve all heard Benjamin Franklin’s famous words: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
But it is also said that “A fine is a tax for doing something wrong” By that logic, I propose that surely tax must be a fine for doing something right.
I know. It’s confusing. Sometimes overwhelming. And with the new tax implications having been so recently announced in the Budget Speech, businesses in the private sector are reeling and individual taxpayers are throwing their hands up in despair.
So, to calm the storm and lower the blood pressure I’ve brought in the expert to make sense of it all.
Contrary to popular belief, emigration is a far cry from just “pack your bags and go”
Before that plane ticket can be bought, there are endless administrative tasks to complete, legal requirements that must be met, bureaucratic red tape to overcome, and – what people often forget to think about - financial and tax requirements that require compliance. All this before you even consider the emotional impact that emigration will have on you and your loved ones
So why have so many people felt the need to leave? And, perhaps more intriguing, why are so many of those people apparently returning home?
